New zealand was one of the fastest acting nations in response to the outbreak of Covid-19. Closing their borders to all non-citizens while there were still barely over a thousand cases worldwide restricted the ability for Covid-19 to continue to infect their citizens. The aim of total elimination, the nation’s top epidemiologists disregarded Flu protocol and started with a very strong response.

After keeping extremely tight borders, and encouraging its community to negate the spread of Covid-19. In late January, the country of 5 million had a citizen test positive for Covid-19 after travelling to Spain. New Zealand has reported 1,927 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 25 deaths, yet this is the first assumed case of the Brazil, South Africa, or possibly the UK variant.

The lockdown recently implemented in New Zealand has come after the UK variant reached the nation of 5 million residents. New Zealand has been one of the most successful developed countries at containing and controlling the Covid-19 virus recording only about 2,000 cases since the original outbreak. A new lockdown was immediately implemented in order to halt the spread of the UK variant that reached New Zealand in late February.

The vaccination effort in New Zealand begins with Border and MIQ workers and those who they live with, which is currently underway. Frontline workers and those who live in possibly harmful conditions are the second to have access to the vaccine, this step is also on the way. Elderly people, and people with prior existing health conditions will be the next to receive the vaccine. The general population will be the last with open access to vaccinations, although the effort to vaccinate all will begin as soon as possible.
