COVID-19 and the Pacific Islands

1. COVID-19 Epidemic Curve

A graph that shows the spread of COVID-19 and its reason. As we can see, in March, the primary reason for the spread of COVID-19 is the travel industry. I find this significant because tourists brought in the virus, and the people who live on the islands had to deal with it later.

2. COVID-19 Epidemic Curve

Here, we can see the change from the first graph to the second graph. While the travel industry initially might have brought the virus to the island, later in the year in July, the main reason for the spread of COVID-19 was due to the community, as travel restrictions did not allow people to come to the islands.

3. COVID-19 Islander Strong

A motivational speech of some representatives of the Utah’s Pacific Islander Community to make sure that everyone comes together as a community to protect one selves and others. I found it very touching how they motivate everyone to do their part and come together as a community. This is what the world needed in the past years – being a community and take care of each other.

4. Mural – Message of hope and unity in a challenging time

The artwork shows a woman stringing a plumeria lei with her two children. This is called “A’ohe hana nui ke alu’ia” and it means “No task is too big when done together by all”. A local artist named Kai’ili Kaulukukui started to pain on Christmas eve and finish right before New Years Eve. The mural is supposed to be an inspiring message of hope and unity at the end of such a challenging year.
