By Lauren Aratani

Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches, hikes, sceneries, and culture. Tourism is what provides Hawaii with most of its money. This article greatly explains the negative effects of COVID-19 on the State of Hawaii’s economy. Due to COVID reaching the islands of Hawaii, it caused a dramatic drop in the economy due to unemployment, the closing of businesses, and a decrease in  tourism. I picked this article because it shows how COVID-19 hurt Hawaii’s economy.

Hawaii’s Reopening May Be Good For Tourism. Is It Good For Locals?

By Tariro Mzezewa

Though the tourism industry is what keeps the economy of Hawaii afloat, reopening the state to tourists is not the best idea for the state. Reopening the state to tourism has its negative effects. As the state closed itself off from tourists for months, recently reopening caused concerns for the locals. With 14 day quarantines and COVID-19 tests being required while entering this Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, locals are untrusting of tourists entering causing harm to their health. I chose this article because it proves how worried and concerned locals are about their health.

Protesters Rally against CoronaVirus Threat that Tourism Brings to Hawaii

In this video, it shows Locals of Hawaii protesting against tourists and the tourism industry with a drive by to show they do not want tourists visiting during a pandemic causing potential harm to the locals. The locals practiced the correct social distancing protocol by staying in their vehicle. They started the protest drive from the Daniel K Inouye airport, where tourists would arrive, and drove to Waikiki, where the majority of the tourists would visit and stay. I picked this video because it shows how important it is to the locals of Hawaii to keep tourists out of Hawaii during a deadly pandemic, while social distancing.

Guy Speaks Out About Unfair Treatment by State about COVID-19, Tourism, and Locals

In this video I found through the social media app, Instagram, it shows a man speaking out about how he feels about tourists being allowed in Hawaii to enjoy their vacations in groups of people, while the locals aren’t allowed to do certain activities or events. I picked this video because I thought what the man stated about how tourists can come and do what they want, the locals can’t even have funerals for their loved ones or watch their child graduate in a big graduation ceremony.
